KC College Advising

Your Path to the
Right College
Starts Here

Personalized, strategic college advising for high school students and their families. I don't just help students get in — I help them find the college where they'll truly thrive.

How I Can Help Your Student

Every student is unique. I don't believe in a one-size-fits-all model — each engagement is built around your student's individual strengths, timeline, and goals.

Course Planning & Selection
  • Which classes should I take and when?
  • How many AP, IB and honors classes should I take?
  • What about online and community college classes?

Grades and course rigor are at the top of most colleges' admissions criteria. Balancing strong grades with challenging courses requires careful planning. Based on prior grades and areas of interest, I make strategic and thoughtful recommendations for classes.

Interest Exploration
  • What type of college will be best for me?
  • What major should I select when applying?
  • What careers might be a good fit with my personality?

College admissions is about more than just getting accepted. Before deciding where to apply, students must learn about themselves and identify the environments in which they will thrive — their "best fit" colleges. As a certified Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) practitioner (Form M, Step I & II — 244 Certification), I use a variety of proven assessment tools to help students understand what interests, motivates, and inspires them as the foundation for selecting colleges, majors, and potential careers.

College List Building
  • How many colleges should I apply to?
  • What is a "balanced" college list?
  • How do I factor cost into my list?

A thoughtful college list balances academic profile, personal interests, campus culture, geography, size, and family priorities. I guide families through building a balanced list of reach, match, and likely schools that genuinely fits — not just a list of names.

Essay Coaching
  • What should I write about for my personal statement?
  • How do I make my essay stand out?
  • How do I handle supplemental essays for each school?

The college essay is your opportunity to go beyond your transcript. I coach students to find their authentic voice, identify compelling stories, and craft essays that are genuine, memorable, and strategically aligned with each school on their list.

Timeline & Application Strategy
  • Should I take the SAT or ACT? When? Which one?
  • Is one extracurricular "better" than another?
  • What should I do during the summer?
  • When should I apply — ED, EA, or Regular Decision?

A successful application doesn't happen overnight — it requires a multi-year strategy. I help families map out a comprehensive, realistic roadmap from freshman year through senior year submissions, ensuring nothing falls through the cracks and every deadline is met with confidence.

I've Walked These Campuses

Great advising starts with knowing colleges firsthand — not just from a brochure. I visit campuses across California and beyond so the guidance I give families is grounded in what these schools are actually like to attend.

Strategic Advisor.
Dedicated Mentor.

Krista Peters holds a BA in Communications from San Diego State University and completed the College Advising Certificate Program at UC Riverside, where she received formal training in admissions processes and ethical, student-centered advising. She is also a certified Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) practitioner, holding the 244 Certification, which she uses to help students gain deeper self-awareness as a foundation for finding their best-fit college.

As a parent, Krista has experienced the admissions process firsthand — her own children now attend highly selective schools in California, giving her both professional insight and a personal understanding of what families are navigating. She guides students through every aspect of the college application process, including course selection strategy, extracurricular positioning, application timelines, and essay development.

Prior to transitioning into college advising, Krista built her career in the tech industry as a Training and Enablement Consultant in the SaaS space. She designed and led scalable learning programs for global teams across sales, engineering, customer success, and partner organizations. Her expertise in translating complex systems into clear, actionable roadmaps now directly benefits her advising clients.

Krista works with a wide array of students and does not believe in a one-size-fits-all model. She stays current on admissions trends through campus visits, ongoing professional development, and active engagement with admissions professionals — so her families always benefit from an informed, up-to-date perspective.

Frequently Asked Questions

Have a question not answered here? Reach out — I'm always happy to talk through what's on your mind.

Get in Touch
When should we start working with a college advisor?+
The earlier the better — ideally in 9th or 10th grade. This allows time for thoughtful course selection, extracurricular development, and a non-rushed application process. That said, it's never too late to benefit from guidance, even in 11th or 12th grade.
What is the difference between a school counselor and an independent college advisor?+
School counselors serve large numbers of students and may not have time for personalized, one-on-one college planning. An independent advisor works exclusively with a select group of families, providing dedicated, customized support throughout the entire process.
Do you guarantee admission to specific schools?+
No ethical college advisor can or should make that promise. What I can guarantee is a strategic, thoughtful, and supportive process that maximizes your student's opportunities and presents their strongest possible application to schools that are the right fit.
How are your services structured and priced?+
Because every student's needs are different, I tailor each engagement rather than forcing families into a one-size-fits-all package — support can range from a single focused area, like essay coaching, to comprehensive multi-year guidance. We'll talk through exactly what your student needs during your free consultation, and I'll walk you through the options and pricing that fit, with no pressure and no surprises.
Do you work with students remotely or only in person?+
I work with families both locally and nationwide via video call. Distance is no barrier to great advising — many of my most successful engagements are conducted fully remotely.
What makes KC College Advising different?+
I bring a unique combination of formal training in college admissions, a background in corporate training and strategic planning, and a genuine commitment to each student as an individual. I don't just help students get into college — I help them find the right college.
